*Texas U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, Commencement address May 11, 2013, Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, MI.  Sen. Cruz continued: “Governed by kings and queens, human beings were told that power starts at the top and flows down; that their rights emanate from a monarch and may be taken away at the monarch’s whim…”

Senator Cruz continued: “As the Declaration of Independence put it, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’  Second, in the Constitution, America’s Founders inverted the understanding of sovereignty. Power comes not from the top down, but up, from “We the People”.

Thus the history of mankind is a history of cruelty and barbarity which most Americans cannot, but must now comprehend, having lived on the sacrifices of those who have gone before. 

A political science university professor of mine opened his class with these summary true words: “The history of the world is the history of a gigantic slaughter bench”.  That is, although a sad reality (as established in our last blog), man is NOT basically good.   That fact we must understand if America’s God-given freedoms are to be saved. Such “man is good” naivity simply disarms Americans of the vigilance necessary to obey God’s mandate to Stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free. – Gal. 5:1

Referencing the Bible about man’s condition, Jeremiah 17:9: The heart of man is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.  Clearly,  today’s horrific struggles throughout our country and the world boil down to freedom vs enslavement of the citizens of nations, thus in America’s case to the imperative that every citizen understand the Source and essence of his and his loved ones’ treasured freedoms.

Our Founding Fathers understood, and gave their lives and fortunes that future generations may be blessed with prosperity and freedom made possible only through God and His Son Jesus Christ.  Their convictions were expressed and locked in through the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.  Following are a few of the convictions of America’s Fathers, and their concerns:

Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that their liberties are a gift of God?” – Thomas Jefferson

Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God. –  Thomas Jefferson

The Constitution of the United States asserts that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercize it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed and that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of press. – Thomas Jefferson

You have the rights antecedent to all earthly governments; rights that cannot be repealed or restrained by human laws; rights derived from the Great Legislator of the Universe. – John Adams, 2nd President
