“A NATION OF GUN WORSHIPERS?”

reflections on

HOT CURRENT GUN ISSUE

A MINISTER’S PUBLISHED VIEWS

In Section A of the Wednesday, August 7 edition of the Orlando Sentinel, The Reverend Dr. Missiouri McFee, minister of worship at Saint Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church in Orlando, wrote:

It makes little sense to be a nation of gun worshipers only to turn around and ask God to heal us from hurt, harm, and destruction of the very thing we worship.

My response: by implying false objects of worship of inanimate weapons Dr. McFee appears to be inadvertently paving the way for confiscation of same and destruction of the U.S. Constitution’s 2nd Amendment – our…

“right to keep and bear arms”.

That is, though no doubt well intended, she is by implication publically advocating the disarmament and disabling of the ability for self-defense by American citizens, which historically in other countries resulted in the enslavement of defenseless men, women and children, and the loss of their God-given freedoms.

Such disarmament of weapons that are intended for personal and family defense is not unique. It has for centuries been the incontestable forerunner of tyrants like Hitler, Stalin, and enslaving barbarians – enemies of freedom.

Jesus Christ at the Last Supper,

Activist not pacifist……..

He instructed the apostles to face the real world and if necessary sell their cloak and buy a sword – to be prepared to defend their families (Luke 22:36). (As you have read in many of this author’s prior blogs, Jesus was no pacifist)… Be salt! Who will stand up for me?, Occupy till I come…, The righteous are bold as a lion…, Keep His commandments…etc.

TIMES AND SEASONS

Of course we all want love, brotherhood and peace, but we have a sacred duty to defend our loved ones, which is precisely the real-world responsibility that Christ Himself taught the apostles.

He Taught there is…

A time to love, and a time …of war, and a time of peace (Eccl 3:8).

Christ through Paul described the enemies of our freedoms:

Their feet are swift to shed blood: destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace they have not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes (Rom. 3:15-18).

Through John He further describes the deadly nature of the enemy:

The thief [Satan – ed] cometh … to steal, and to kill, and to destroy (John 10:10).

ETERNAL VIGILENCE

In fact, the reality of man’s “fallen nature”, and therefore the neverending threat to our sacred freedoms, was so paramount even in the American Revolution and writing of the U.S. Constitution, that  overwhelmingly the Christian Founding Fathers literally lived by the expression:  Eternal vigilance is forever the price of liberty.

ACT OF SACRED DUTY, not of  WEAPONS WORSHIP

Christ did not imply that in the eyes of God, buying a sword (Luke 22:36) would be an act of “weapon worship”; rather an act of sacred duty in the actual world and Christian responsiblity to the family institution in a hostile fallen world..

To desire and intensely want peace is natural, but Christians are commanded to face up to and cope with the times in which we live.

A CONCLUDING VIEW ABOUT LOVE AND DUTY

He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth [Christ – ed] is not in him (1 John 2:4).

In no way does God authorize us to switch from God worship to gun worship. Rather, He contends that weapons used for defense of His blessings, both national and family, are imperative.
