William Shirer wrote in his famous book The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich:
“In the spring of 1938, Bishop Marahrens took the final step of ordering all pastors in his diocese to swear a personal oath of allegiance to the Fuehrer. In short, the vast majority of Protestant clergymen took the oath, thus binding themselves legally and morally to obey the commands of the dictator.
‘It would be misleading to give the impression that the persecution of Protestants and Catholics by the Nazi State tore the German people asunder or even greatly aroused the vast majority of them. It did not. A people who had so lightly given up their political and cultural and economic freedoms were not, except for a relatively few, going to die or even risk imprisonment to preserve freedom of worship….” P 240-241.
Historians and Bible scholars, including America’s founding fathers, have noted that political freedom and its defiance of evil are the outflowing of the church’s obedience to God’s laws of liberty. Thus a prime objective of the forces of evil and tyranny is to emasculate then extinguish freedom of worship.
In today’s America, many contend that a major sign of encroaching government tyranny over the church is the 501©3 tax exemption through which the government requires the clergy’s adherence to certain government sanctions: for example, preaching God’s Word about homosexuality as “abomination”. Such preaching is considered the commission of a “hate crime.” The once vigilant American clergy have, with few exceptions, become weak and timid instead of boldly proclaiming God’s Word about the pillars of liberty.
A recent book endorsed by national authorities, Abandonment Theology – The Clergy And The Decline Of American Christianity, sets forth the parallel paths of America today and Hitler’s Germany. This book became known as America – A Call To Greatness, and is available through most book stores. To read a description of it and order, go to www.greatness.us.
